De Young Announces ‘Made in San Francisco’: A Major Celebration of Post-WWII Bay Area Art

Big, joyful art news from Golden Gate Park! The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco have announced Made in San Francisco, a major survey of post–World War II Bay Area art that reveals how the city became a launchpad for new artists and art styles. The exhibition will be on view at the de Young Museum from April 10 to October 24, 2027.

From Abstract Expressionism and Bay Area Figuration to Beat, Funk, and assemblage art, more than 100 works by over 70 artists tell the story of how San Francisco shaped a generation of artists — and how that generation went on to shape the art world. The exhibition also examines the rich legacy of the California School of Fine Arts, later the San Francisco Art Institute, whose classrooms and studios nurtured so much of this creative energy.

It is a celebration of the city itself: its freedom, its experimentation, and the wild creative spirit that turned the Bay Area into one of the most influential art centers of the twentieth century. Mark your calendars — spring 2027 at the de Young is going to be unforgettable!
