First North American Museum Retrospective of Korean Master Ha Chong-Hyun Opens at the Asian Art Museum

San Francisco art lovers are in for a treat: the Asian Art Museum presents Ha Chong-Hyun: Retrospective, the first museum exhibition in North America devoted to the acclaimed Korean contemporary artist Ha Chong-Hyun, on view September 25, 2026 through January 25, 2027 at the Yang Yamazaki Pavilion.

Born in 1935, Ha has spent six decades redefining abstraction. He transforms canvases up to eight feet tall using pressure, gravity, blowtorches and everyday tools, building surfaces of extraordinary texture and materiality. Walking through the exhibition is a full sensory journey through an artist who literally pushes paint to its limits.

It’s also a living exhibition: the museum offers guided tours, including ones on Monday, October 5 at 11:00 AM and Thursday, October 8 at 1:30 PM. A landmark show by a true master of contemporary art — right here at 200 Larkin Street.
