Get ready, opera lovers: San Francisco Opera has just revealed the stellar cast for one of the most legendary musical adventures ever staged — Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, coming to the War Memorial Opera House in the summer of 2028!
Known as the Ring Cycle, this epic spans four operas — Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung — telling a sweeping tale of gods, heroes, dragons and a magical ring, crowned by a heroine’s sacrifice that gives the world a new beginning. It is widely considered the most ambitious work ever written for the lyric stage.
Caroline H. Hume Music Director Eun Sun Kim will conduct three complete cycles, from June 13 through July 2, 2028 — her first time leading the massive work. Francesca Zambello directs her visually spectacular staging, a co-production with Washington National Opera first unveiled in San Francisco in 2011 and revived in 2018.
The announced cast brings together an all-star lineup: Tamara Wilson, Brian Mulligan, Simon O’Neill, Falk Struckmann, Julie Adams, Christopher Sokolowski, Judit Kutasi, Brenton Ryan, Zhengyi Bai, John Relyea, Kwangchul Youn, Annika Schlicht, Sadie Cheslak and Sofia Gotch.
The news crowns Eun Sun Kim’s acclaimed multi-season Wagner journey, which began with Lohengrin in 2023, continued with Tristan und Isolde in 2024 and Parsifal in 2025, and continues with Das Rheingold (May 29–June 22, 2027), whose tickets are already on sale.
Tickets for the complete 2028 Ring cycles go on sale on October 13 at 10 a.m. for Ring Circle members, 2026–27 Season subscribers and donors of $150 or more, and to the general public in July 2027.
