Exploratorium Celebrates Life and Death with a Dia de los Muertos After Dark on Oct. 22

Death has never been so fascinating — or so full of light. The Exploratorium invites grown-ups to an unforgettable evening of science, art and tradition with After Dark: Death and Life / La muerte y la vida, on Thursday, October 22, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Pier 15 on the Embarcadero.

The night explores one of humanity’s biggest questions through the eyes of science: what can death teach us about life? Visitors can join fascinating talks, hands-on activities and thought-provoking exhibits that reveal how scientists study life by looking at its end — and how different cultures honor the circle of existence.

A radiant highlight will be the dazzling Día de los Muertos altar created by the Marigold Project, a beautiful tribute that fills the museum with color, marigolds and memory. And for the brave, the world-famous Tactile Dome returns with a special Halloween-inspired twist: walk, crawl, climb and slide through total darkness in an experience that is thrilling yet not-too-scary.

After Dark is an adults-only (18+) evening, and the special Tactile Dome experience requires a reservation — advance tickets are strongly recommended. They can be purchased online or by calling 415.528.4444 (option 5), and also at the museum’s ticketing desk.
