San Francisco’s art scene is about to get a spectacular new heartbeat. On November 21, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art unveils Forever is Composed of Nows, a brand-new site-specific commission by celebrated artist Sarah Sze — her most ambitious project to date.
Picture this: you step into the museum’s soaring Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Atrium and find it transformed into a shifting, dreamlike landscape. Three monumental paintings meet a flowing stream of video projections and rhythmic, pulsating soundscapes. Light, sound and movement intertwine into a fully immersive experience that feels alive around you.
The work draws its inspiration from the fragility of nature, the fleeting life of images and the passage of time. Its title borrows a line from a 19th-century Emily Dickinson poem, echoing Sze’s meditation on time as a continuum of present moments — each one adding its own memory to forever.
This is one of those rare artworks you don’t just look at — you step inside it. Mark your calendar and check the museum’s website for tickets and visiting hours.
