Windansea Beach: La Jolla’s Legendary Surf Shack and Sunset Shore

Some beaches are famous for what people built on them. Windansea Beach, on the La Jolla coast of San Diego, is famous for a palm-thatched hut — and for the waves that keep trying to knock it down. The Windansea Surf Shack, first raised in 1946 by returning World War II surfers, is a San Diego Historic Landmark and one of the most beloved silhouettes on the California coast.

The shack has been lovingly rebuilt by the local surf community after powerful winter storms, most recently after the surf of 2015-16, a ritual of care that says everything about this place. Below it, a reef break that works in almost any swell direction draws experienced surfers from dawn onward, while the sandstone bluffs and tide-sculpted rock ledges make the shoreline feel wonderfully wild for a city beach.

Windansea is a locals’ beach in the best sense: no big parking lot, no boardwalk crowds, just a neighborhood shore made for long sunset walks, watching the lineup from the rocks and listening to the sets roll in. Come for the view from Neptune Place, stay low on the ledges at low tide, and let the Pacific put on its evening show. Happy City News loves a landmark that a whole community refuses to let go.
