High above Pacific Beach, Kate Sessions Memorial Park spreads across 79 acres of grassy hillside — one of San Diego’s happiest places to spend a slow afternoon. The city park honors horticulturist Kate Sessions, the beloved ‘Mother of Balboa Park,’ whose plantings shaped San Diego’s green landscape more than a century ago.
The park’s wide open lawns roll gently down the slopes of Mount Soledad, and the payoff is the view: Mission Bay sparkles to the south, the Pacific Ocean stretches to the west, and on clear days the panorama takes in downtown San Diego and the hills of Mexico beyond. It is a favorite local spot for picnics, kite flying, frisbee games and simply sitting on the grass as the light changes over the water.
Families will find picnic areas, a children’s playground and plenty of room for dogs on leash to enjoy the breeze, while walkers follow the paths that wind through the park’s open spaces. Because it sits in a quiet residential corner of Pacific Beach, the park keeps a relaxed neighborhood feel even on sunny weekends.
Best of all, sunset here is a small daily celebration. As the sky turns gold and pink over the bay, Kate Sessions Memorial Park reminds everyone why San Diego’s outdoor life is so easy to love. Admission is free.
