Old Town San Diego: Where California’s Story Began

Step into the birthplace of California! Old Town San Diego State Historic Park preserves the adobe buildings, plazas and frontier spirit of San Diego’s first settlement, founded in 1769 — and walking its streets feels like time travel.

The park protects historic homes, the first schoolhouse, the courthouse and the iconic Fiesta de Reyes plaza, where mariachis, artisans and living-history demonstrations keep 19th-century Californio culture alive. Many buildings are free to enter, and costumed interpreters share stories of the city’s Mexican and early American eras.

It is ideal for history lovers, families and first-time visitors: everything is walkable, shaded and free. Practical tip: come on a weekend for the liveliest demonstrations, then stay for an early dinner in the surrounding Old Town neighborhood — the park itself closes at dusk, but the fiesta continues.
