Tucked between sandstone cliffs in the village of La Jolla, this small, postcard-perfect cove is one of the most photographed spots on the Southern California coast — and one of the best places in San Diego to watch wildlife up close.
La Jolla Cove sits inside a protected marine reserve, which is why its waters teem with life: curious sea lions haul out on the rocks (watch from the overlook, never touch), while snorkelers and scuba divers glide over leopard sharks, garibaldi and sea turtles in the calm, clear water.
It is ideal for families with older kids, snorkeling beginners and sunset lovers: the Cove’s calm waves are gentle, but parking is the real adventure — arrive early on weekends. Practical tip: bring binoculars and walk the Coast Walk Trail above the cliffs for sweeping ocean views and more sea lion sightings.
