South of downtown, the San Antonio River opens into the Mission Reach — eight miles of trails, picnic spots and wildflower meadows connecting the city’s beloved Spanish colonial missions. Families can walk or bike between Mission Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada, all part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
Kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge from National Park Service rangers, spot herons and turtles along the river, and explore mission churches that still anchor neighborhood life after 300 years. Ranger talks and free family programs run throughout the year.
With trailheads, playgrounds and shady pavilions along the way, the Mission Reach turns a family outing into a journey through living history — and admission to the park is always free.
