First South Korean Artist Solo Show Arrives at the McNay with “Suki Seokyeong Kang: Mountain—Hour—Face”

A wave of Korean poetry, rhythm and light is about to sweep through San Antonio! The McNay Art Museum presents Suki Seokyeong Kang: Mountain—Hour—Face, on view October 30, 2026 through January 24, 2027 — the first solo exhibition by a South Korean artist in the museum’s history.

Nearly 40 works created between 2014 and 2024 transform the galleries into an immersive landscape of sculpture, painting, textiles, installation, video and poetry. Delicate aluminum mobiles from Kang’s Mountain — hours series drift in response to the air and the visitors’ movement, while two handwoven hwamunseok mats — making their United States debut — hang from the ceiling, reimagining a centuries-old Korean court dance in striking contemporary form.

Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and adapted for the McNay by curator Lauren Thompson, the show also features the abstract human figures of the Tender Meander series and Grandmother Tower, on loan from a Dallas-area collection. An opening celebration will feature live poetry, and dancers will later bring the galleries to life with a special performance activation inspired by the art.

Kang, who earned degrees in Seoul and London and received the Baloise Art Prize in 2018, found inspiration in natural forms, seasonal change, music and movement. As San Antonio’s sister city is Gwangju, South Korea, this luminous exhibition feels especially close to home.

Find it at the McNay Art Museum, 6000 N New Braunfels Ave, San Antonio, TX 78209. Open Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m.–9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m.
