A Burst of Color and Joy: New Great Hall Mural Brightens the San Antonio Museum of Art

Stepping into the San Antonio Museum of Art just got even more delightful! The museum’s Great Hall, its grand main lobby, is now home to a brand-new mural by artist Marisa Morán Jahn — the second chapter of SAMA’s Gateway Series, which invites contemporary artists to transform the entrance into a work of art.

Born in Texas and now based in New York, Jahn created an immersive, site-specific installation inspired by the museum’s history as the former Lone Star Brewery. Playing with the idea of “spirits” — the drinks made from distilled and fermented plants — she explores how art can shift our perspective and bring people together. Wine-colored paint seems to slide playfully off the walls, spill onto the floor and seep around corners, while vinyl graphics add pops of teal, magenta and gold in a celebration of revelry and joy.

“Like the art collections of SAMA, the work interweaves traditions from a vast range of cultures and geographies, while rooted in histories that are distinctly San Antonio,” notes the museum. Jahn herself describes the artwork as behaving “as if it’s ecstatic,” inviting us to see the museum — and the world — in a brand-new way.

The mural will be on view through November 14, 2027, so you have plenty of time to go see it, snap a photo, and let its happy energy brighten your day. SAMA is located at 200 West Jones Avenue and is open Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m.–9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday noon–5 p.m.
