A Century of Wonder: The Witte Museum Celebrates 100 Years With a Special Anniversary Exhibition

The Witte Museum is turning 100 — and throwing itself a once-in-a-century celebration. The Witte Museum: 100 Years is on view now through January 9, 2027, tracing the beloved museum’s journey from 1926 to today in the Laura & Sam Dawson and Russell Hill Rogers Texas Art Galleries.

The story begins with teacher and botanist Ellen Schulz Quillin, whose students collected nickels and dimes to buy the Attwater Natural History Collection — the spark that lit a century of discovery. More than 115 objects from the museum’s collections and archives fill the exhibition, from historic treasures to playful interactive experiences: test your reflexes against a rattlesnake strike, reenact the disappearance of the McFarlin Diamond — an unsolved 1968 heist — and share your own favorite Witte memories. Text panels are bilingual in English and Spanish.

The exhibition is included with general museum admission and welcomes visitors of all ages, with support from the Stumberg family and other donors.

One hundred years of wonder deserve a celebration — plan your visit at the Witte Museum’s official website.
