Dig into history with your family — for free. On Saturday, October 17, the San Antonio Museum of Art opens its doors for Free Family Day: Archaeology Adventures, a full day celebrating International Archaeology Day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Young explorers will handle real artifacts, meet local archaeologists, and take part in interactive stations run by the UTSA Center for Archaeological Research, the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation, the Texas Historical Commission, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, reenactors from Legio X Fretensis and the Texas Department of Transportation. Activities include art-making from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., plus two talks: “Monkeys in Ancient Maya Art and Archaeology” with Bernadette Cap at 11:30 a.m., and “How to be an Archaeologist in Pompeii” with Lynley McAlpine at 1:30 p.m.
Don’t miss the Ancient Worlds Scavenger Quest through the galleries — complete it for a prize. Kids can also make jewelry inspired by ancient artifacts, clay vessels, masks and black-figure Greek painting. Registration is recommended but not required, and admission is free all day.
