Oregon Zoo: A Wild Day Out in Portland’s West Hills

Climbing into the forested hills of Washington Park, the Oregon Zoo spreads 64 acres of habitats home to nearly 1,800 animals — from the beloved Asian elephant herd splashing in Elephant Lands to Amur tigers, polar bears and the red pandas that steal every heart.

Families plan their day around keeper talks, sea lion feedings and the Wildlife Live shows, while the zoo railway chugs its scenic loop in season. Conservation is the quiet star: the zoo breeds California condors, Oregon silverspot butterflies and northern leopard frogs for release into the wild.

Zoo camps, overnights and the famous ZooLights winter tradition keep Portland families coming back in every season. It’s the city’s wildest classroom — and its happiest.
