Free Family Days: Portland’s Museums Open Their Doors Wide

Portland’s culture is famously generous, and smart families plan around its free days. The Portland Art Museum throws open its doors on First Thursdays; OMSI runs periodic $4-and-under discount days; the Japanese Garden and Lan Su offer community free days through the year; and Multnomah County Library’s free “Discover & Pass” program lends admission to gardens and museums like a book.

Add the always-free joys — the Rose Test Garden, Forest Park’s trails, the Architectural Heritage Center’s galleries, Oregon Rail Heritage Center’s engine house — and a family can fill a month of weekends without a ticket budget.

Check each museum’s calendar before you go, arrive early on free days, and spend the savings on hot chocolate. Culture for all isn’t a slogan here; it’s a schedule.
