Five Oaks Museum: Washington County’s Story, Told With New Voices

Named for the five white oaks that marked a Kalapuya council ground, the Five Oaks Museum at Portland Community College’s Rock Creek campus retells Washington County’s history with welcome new voices.

Its signature exhibition, “This IS Kalapuyan Land,” was curated with Indigenous artists and turns the traditional pioneer museum on its head — pairing historic artifacts with contemporary Native art and honest storytelling. Rotating shows cover everything from the county’s farm heritage to its transformation into the Silicon Forest.

It’s a model for what local museums can be: rooted, brave and community-built. Worth the trip west for anyone who thinks local history is boring — prepare to be corrected, happily.
