Downtown Portland’s cultural crown is a quintet: Portland’5 Centers for the Arts operates the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, the Keller Auditorium and the three intimate theatres of Antoinette Hatfield Hall — the Newmark, Dolores Winningstad and Brunish. Together they host more than 1,000 performances a year.
The Schnitzer, a 1928 Italian Rococo movie palace crowned by the famous 65-foot “Portland” sign, is home to the Oregon Symphony. The Keller brings Broadway tours and grand opera to its 3,000 seats, while Hatfield Hall’s smaller rooms sparkle with plays, dance and chamber music.
Free community days, rush tickets and the glowing marquee on Broadway make this district the city’s living room of the arts. When the Schnitzer sign lights up at dusk, Portland knows the night is about to get good.
