Gounod’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’ Closes Pittsburgh Opera’s Season in April 2027

Save the grandest passion for last. Pittsburgh Opera closes its 88th season with Gounod’s Romeo & Juliet at the Benedum Center April 17–25, 2027 — the beloved French setting of Shakespeare’s tragedy, famous for its intoxicating duets and its waltzing, moonlit glow.

Of all the operatic Romeos, Gounod’s remains the most swooningly romantic, and the Benedum’s grand scale gives the production room to soar: feuding houses, a masked ball, a balcony at midnight and a finale that fills the big house with silence before it erupts. It is the season’s final production — and its most sumptuous.

Romeo & Juliet opens Saturday, April 17, 2027 at 7 p.m. at the Benedum Center, 237 7th Street downtown, with additional performances through April 25. Tickets at pittsburghopera.org.
