North Park has a southern twin, and local families swear by both. South Park, the Allegheny County park in the South Hills, packs 2,013 acres with the region’s favorite summer wave pool, a year-round ice rink, the South Park BMX track (a national-level racing institution), skate park, golf and miles of shaded trails.
The park’s fairgrounds host the Allegheny County Fair’s spirit year-round with concerts and events, while the Oliver Miller Homestead — a preserved 18th-century stone house — adds living history to a park day. Kids gravitate to the playgrounds and the wave pool’s beach entry; parents gravitate to the groves and grills.
South Park sits along PA-88 in South Park Township, free to enter. Schedules for the rink, pool and events are at alleghenycounty.us. Summer Sundays here are a Pittsburgh birthright.
