Pittsburgh’s rivers built the city; its trails let families ride right through the story. The Three Rivers Heritage Trail system links more than 30 miles of riverfront paths — mostly flat, paved and traffic-free — connecting Point State Park, the North Shore stadiums, the Strip District, Station Square and the South Side.
For a first family ride, try the North Shore stretch: start at the Point, roll past PNC Park and the Mr. Rogers statue, cross the Clemente Bridge for a downtown snack, and return along the Allegheny as the inclines climb Mount Washington across the water. Bike rentals and the city’s trail maps make it easy to improvise; Riverlife’s trail resources at riverlifepgh.org cover routes, rules and restrooms.
Pack water, plan a playground stop on the North Shore and let the kids ring their bells crossing the bridges. This is Pittsburgh at its happiest speed.
