Some museums whisper. The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh hums, splashes and builds. Set in a landmark former post office joined to the grand old Buhl Planetarium building on the North Side, it is consistently ranked among America’s best children’s museums — a place where kids make real things with real tools and get gloriously messy doing it.
The MAKESHOP lets children sew, hammer and circuit-build beside teaching artists; the Waterplay area turns rain gear into the dress code; the Studio and the rotating exhibition gallery keep the calendar fresh; and the Kindness Gallery and garden spaces slow the day down beautifully. Outside, the misting ‘cloud’ sculpture and gardens extend the play.
The museum is at 10 Children’s Way in Allegheny Commons, open daily. Details at pittsburghkids.org — timed tickets help on weekends and school holidays.
