MuseumLab: Where Pittsburgh’s Big Kids Make Big Things

When kids outgrow the water table, Pittsburgh has a next step. MuseumLab, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh’s creativity campus for youth 10 and up, occupies the beautifully restored former Carnegie Free Library of Allegheny next door — a soaring landmark where older kids and teens dive into metalworking, animation, circuitry, design and digital making.

The building itself teaches: its restored 1890 bones — arches, columns and a grand reading room — were deliberately left with their history visible, pairing naturally with the high-tech studios inside. Workshops, camps and after-school programs run year-round, and the space hosts exhibitions and events for the whole community.

MuseumLab is at 6 Allegheny Square East on the North Side. Program schedules and tickets are at pittsburghkids.org — it’s the rare museum that grows up exactly when your kids do.
