The Miniature Railroad & Village: Pittsburgh’s Tiniest, Most Beloved Neighborhood

It has its own seasons, its own skyline and generations of devoted fans. The Miniature Railroad & Village at Kamin Science Center recreates Western Pennsylvania in miniature — thousands of handcrafted buildings, bridges, ballparks and riverboats, animated with trains, trolleys and tiny moving lives, all built to exquisite HO scale.

The village’s story is Pittsburgh’s own: Charles Bowdish began building his railroad in 1919, and the display has delighted the public since 1954, growing room by room into a 2,300-square-foot world. Look closely and you’ll find miniature replicas of real Pittsburgh landmarks, scenes from all four seasons in different corners, and new details added every year — locals return each season to find what changed.

The Miniature Railroad & Village is a permanent favorite at the Kamin Science Center, One Allegheny Avenue. Included with admission — and impossible to rush.
