There is no bad day to wander into Phipps Conservatory. Pittsburgh’s 1893 glasshouse palace in Schenley Park holds 14 rooms of curated wonder — a palm court that smells of rain, orchid and bonsai rooms, a tropical forest, a sunken garden and a fern room — with 23 gardens blooming across 15 acres outside.
Since 1894, Phipps’ seasonal flower shows have set the city’s calendar: spring bulbs, a summer spectacle, the nation’s longest-running fall chrysanthemum show and the beloved Holiday Magic winter display of lights and poinsettias. Between shows, the permanent collections astonish: world-class orchids, rare bonsai, a rooftop edible garden and some of the greenest buildings on Earth, including the net-zero Center for Sustainable Landscapes.
Phipps stands at One Schenley Park in Oakland, drawing nearly half a million visitors a year. Timed tickets are at phipps.conservatory.org — book ahead on show weekends.
