Grandview Avenue: The Balcony Over Pittsburgh

USA TODAY readers once voted it one of the most beautiful views in America, and standing on Grandview Avenue, nobody argues. Mount Washington’s scenic boulevard runs the rim of the hill south of the Monongahela, with overlooks that frame downtown Pittsburgh in its full glory — three rivers, golden bridges, the fountain at the Point and a skyline that punches far above its size.

The overlooks come one after another: the formal platforms near the Duquesne Incline, the sweeping bend at the avenue’s eastern end, quiet benches in between. Come at sunrise for the light, at sunset for the drama, and after dark for the city’s full sparkle — each hour paints a different Pittsburgh.

Reach Grandview Avenue via either incline from Station Square or Carson Street, or drive up McArdle Roadway. It’s free, it’s open around the clock and it never, ever gets old.
