Andy Warhol saved everything — and labeled it art. His Time Capsules, 612 cardboard boxes filled between 1974 and his death in 1987 with the daily tide of his life — letters, receipts, photographs, gifts, newspapers, even a pizza crust — now form one of the most famous archives in art history, housed at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.
Since the museum opened in 1994, archivists have been opening the boxes one by one, cataloging thousands of objects that together form an accidental autobiography of the artist and his era. Selections rotate into the museum’s galleries, and the ongoing unboxing has become a beloved saga for Warhol fans worldwide.
