On the Schuylkill’s west bank sits America’s oldest surviving botanic garden: Bartram’s Garden, where botanist John Bartram planted his wonders from 1728 and Benjamin Franklin’s friend sent seeds across an ocean. Today its 50 acres mix historic gardens, a wildflower meadow, river trails and a working community farm – and families can explore it all for free, dawn to dusk.
Kids love the hands-on nature programs, the Sankofa Community Farm’s goats-to-greens energy and kayaking days on the river with the garden’s own boating program. It’s Philadelphia’s green time machine: step in, slow down and let three centuries of gardening do the teaching.
