What a beautiful way to spend a Saturday: the Penn Museum is throwing open its doors — completely free — for a Free Community Day celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day, today from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The celebration honors the nation’s first inhabitants and the vibrant, enduring cultures of the Indigenous communities rooted in Philadelphia. Expect a full day of free programming for all ages: artist presentations, films, hands-on activities and more, presented together with the Philadelphia Historic District’s “52 Weeks of Firsts” and Penn and Philly’s 250 Years of Shared History, part of the year-round programming leading up to America’s 250th birthday.
The star of the day is the Museum’s recently opened Native North America Gallery, a space reimagined from the ground up: more than 250 objects from the Museum’s collections shown alongside contemporary Native art, shaped in partnership with eight Indigenous consulting curators. Through first-person stories spanning 13,000 years and four regions of the United States, the gallery gives a richer, truer picture of Native resilience, artistry and tradition.
Bring the family, bring your curiosity — admission is free and open to everyone. The Penn Museum is located at 3260 South Street, and it’s open today until 5:00 p.m.
