Inwood just became home to a historic first. The People’s Theatre: Centro Cultural Inmigrante celebrated its ribbon-cutting on September 15, 2026, with Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda joining the celebration, and opened its doors to the public on September 19 with a free Community Open House and Intergenerational Jazz Power Jam.
The 19,000-square-foot center at 419 West 206th Street is New York City’s first immigrant-centered performing arts center and the largest Latino-owned and operated performing arts institution in New York State. Designed by the architecture firm WORKac, it houses a flexible Mainstage Theatre for up to 208 patrons, a smaller studio theatre, four rehearsal studios, a gallery, a café and a permanent mural, Liquid Highway, by Dominican-American artist Scherezade Garcia, honoring migration and identity.
The inaugural 2026–27 season is packed with joy: the bilingual premiere of GUAC (September 25–October 10), an Uptown Cabaret with Broadway stars Robin de Jesús and Linedy Genao (October 6), a conversation with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes (October 13), the multilingual community production Wayfinding (October 17–29) and the Second Annual Uptown Fall Fest (October 24).
Founded in 2009 by Mino Lora, The People’s Theatre is expected to welcome more than 28,000 audience members and 300 artists every year. A permanent home for immigrant stories — and a must-visit destination for all New Yorkers.
