For generations of New Orleans kids, childhood begins at Storyland: a storybook playground in City Park where children climb into Cinderella’s pumpkin coach, slide down Jack’s beanstalk and captain a pirate ship beneath moss-draped oaks.
Next door, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park adds gentle rides for young thrill-seekers — crowned by one of the country’s last carved wooden carousels, spinning since 1906 and lovingly called the ‘flying horses.’
Together with the train that circles the park, they form the holy trinity of a classic New Orleans childhood: fairy tales, flying horses and beignets at the Morning Call-style café stops nearby.
