Weisman Art Museum: Gehry’s Steel Jewel on the Mississippi

From the Washington Avenue Bridge it looks like a cubist waterfall frozen in stainless steel. The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, designed by Frank Gehry in 1993 and expanded by him in 2011, is the University of Minnesota’s art museum — and one of Minneapolis’s great free joys.

Inside, sunlight pours over 25,000 works: American modernism (Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe), Korean furniture, Native American pottery and ceramics traditions deep enough to fill their own gallery. The museum’s river-facing terraces frame the downtown skyline like a painting you’re standing in.

Students treat it as a study lounge with masterpieces; visitors treat it as a Gehry pilgrimage. Both are right. Free admission makes the Weisman the easiest “yes” in Twin Cities culture.
