The Cowles Center: Minneapolis’s Home for Dance

Dance in Minnesota has an address: 528 Hennepin Avenue. The Cowles Center for Dance & the Performing Arts joined two historic theatres — the 1910 Shubert and the former Masonic temple — into the region’s dance hub, home to companies spanning Minnesota Dance Theatre’s ballet, Ragamala’s Bharatanatyam brilliance, TU Dance’s contemporary fire and the tap joy of Keane Sense of Rhythm.

The Cowles’ seasons showcase Minnesota’s astonishing dance diversity — one stage hosting classical Indian dance, Afro-modern premieres and holiday Nutcrackers — while its education programs stream classes to schools statewide. The restored Goodale Theater seats audiences close enough to hear dancers breathe.

Hennepin Avenue’s revival runs on culture, and The Cowles is its beating, leaping heart.
