Los Angeles families are invited to celebrate life, memory and community in a beautiful way this fall. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) will host a Día de Muertos Family Day on Sunday, November 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the program is included free with general museum admission.
At the heart of the day is a large participatory community altar — an ofrenda where guests of all ages are encouraged to take part, not just look on. It is a gentle, welcoming introduction for children to one of Mexico’s most cherished traditions, filled with color, marigolds and heartfelt remembrance.
Young visitors can roll up their sleeves at a hands-on marigold-making station presented with the museum’s Mobile Museum team, crafting the bright orange flowers — cempasúchil — that guide spirits with their color and scent. Families will also find a curated selection of community resources sharing cultural knowledge and local support.
The museum promises more festive surprises to be announced soon, making this an ideal plan to pair with exploring NHM’s beloved dinosaur halls, nature gardens and dioramas. Mark the calendar, bring the whole family, and enjoy a joyful day where culture and natural history bloom side by side in Exposition Park.
