Autumn is bringing extra color to the hills above Los Angeles, and the Getty Center and Getty Villa are joining the celebration with a fall season packed with music, family fun, and delicious surprises. Admission is free — all you need is a timed-entry reservation.
Music lovers get a treat first: on October 4, “Ever Present: A Moveable Feast of No” revives New York’s punk and No Wave scene with downtown legends the Bush Tetras and wandering guitar players throughout the Center. On October 23, a screening of the documentary “Nova ’78” about the legendary William S. Burroughs convention is followed by an electronic-vocal performance. And on November 14, “Canto de Todes” weaves chamber classical, folk, and torch song into one indoor performance.
Families have their own party on October 17: the fall Family Festival “LA and Mexico in Focus” fills the Center with mariachi, ballet folklórico, and bilingual storytelling, inspired by exhibitions on Mexican photography and Chicano/a communities. At the Villa, bilingual mosaic-making workshops with artist Andrés Cortes run from October through January.
Food and drink fans are not left out: the “Tastemakers” supper clubs return on October 11 and November 22, and on October 10 the Villa hosts “Bacchus Uncorked,” pairing ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian beer culture with modern brews and bites. Talk about drinking like a pharaoh!
Art talks accompany new exhibitions, from Odilon Redon’s moody drawings to sculpted portraits from ancient Egypt — many of them free and some online. Check the Getty calendar, grab your spot, and enjoy one of LA’s most beautiful places this fall.
