Los Angeles is about to give one of its own a grand homecoming. The J. Paul Getty Museum, the California African American Museum (CAAM), and Art + Practice have teamed up to present three concurrent exhibitions of new work by Reggie Burrows Hodges — his first solo museum presentations in his hometown of Los Angeles.
Born in Compton in 1965, Hodges paints dreamlike scenes that explore memory, labor, and everyday life, building his compositions from soft, luminous marks on dark grounds. For these shows, he looked to Old Master paintings in the Getty’s collection — from Orazio Gentileschi to Jacopo Bassano — and reimagined them in his own poetic, personal style.
“Reggie Burrows Hodges: A Theater of Passions” opens October 20 at the Getty Center and runs through February 28, 2027. On the very same day, CAAM in Exposition Park welcomes “A Theater of Miracles” (also through February 28, 2027), while Art + Practice in Leimert Park hosts “A Theater of Dreams” (through February 27, 2027) — a fitting celebration in South L.A., where the artist was born and raised.
Best of all: admission to the Getty is always free, and on October 27 the Getty Center hosts a free public lecture with Hodges himself, followed by a reception and a special viewing of the installation.
