First Ballet: Kansas City Ballet’s Student Matinees Open Young Eyes

For thousands of Kansas City students each season, the first ballet they ever see comes through Kansas City Ballet’s student matinee program — school-day performances at the Kauffman Center, trimmed, narrated and priced for young audiences.

Schools across the metro bring classes to experience full professional productions — from story ballets like Pinocchio to the holiday Nutcracker — with study guides that connect the dancing to classroom learning in music, storytelling and movement.

The company’s Second Company and training programs also take ballet out into schools and community venues, proving that world-class art belongs to every zip code in the metro.

Many of today’s Kansas City Ballet dancers started exactly this way: one school bus, one darkened theatre, one unforgettable hour.
