Hands-On History: Kids Become Explorers at the WWI Museum

History you can touch: at the National WWI Museum and Memorial, the Hands-On History program invites kids to handle (replica) history — trying on gear, exploring artifacts with educators and discovering what a soldier’s life actually felt like, pack weight and all.

Sessions run on scheduled mornings (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through Sundays, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. in season) and are included with museum admission, making them the smartest add-on to a family visit. Scavenger-style activities lead young historians from the poppy field to the galleries to Memory Hall.

Pair the program with a ride up Liberty Memorial Tower for the city’s best view, and let the kids find Kansas City landmarks from 217 feet up.

It’s the rare museum day where “don’t touch” becomes “please do.”
