Skate the Season: Crown Center Ice Terrace, Kansas City’s Outdoor Rink

When the air turns crisp, Kansas City families head for the Crown Center Ice Terrace — the city’s beloved outdoor ice rink, gliding under the skyline since 1973 and still the happiest sheet of ice in town.

The rink opens for the season each November and skates through winter, with skate rentals for every size, a festive soundtrack and the Mayor’s Christmas Tree rising beside it during the holidays — one of the tallest natural trees in the nation.

First-timers can hug the rails while future Olympians carve the center; hot chocolate waits at the surrounding Crown Center shops when toes get cold.

Some families count down to the pumpkin patch. Kansas City counts down to first skate.
