Free Family Day at the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures on November 8

Small wonders fill big rooms in Kansas City. The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures invites families to its next Second Sunday Free Day on Sunday, November 8, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — a whole day to explore one of the most joyful museums in the Midwest, free of charge.

The museum, at 5235 Oak Street, brings together two beloved collections. Its toy galleries trace social and cultural history through playthings from about 1690 to today — dollhouses and games, green army men, Barbie dolls and video game consoles that spark instant nostalgia across generations. Alongside them, the fine-scale miniature galleries showcase handmade artistry at 1:12 scale: miniature rooms and structures, tiny musical instruments, paintings, tools and even food, each crafted by artists often inspired by full-scale originals.

A current exhibition highlight, Native Arts in Miniature, explores diverse tribal traditions, family heritage and creative innovation through Native American artists working in miniature, with video interviews sharing the artists’ own voices, techniques and inspirations. The museum’s calendar keeps the season busy, too, with its Story Connections program on October 27 and a Meet the Maker session on November 14.

The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Tuesday. Mark November 8 on the calendar, bring the kids — and the grandparents — and prepare to lean in close: here, the smallest details tell the biggest stories.
