Some places welcome you to a city. Union Station Kansas City does that and then invites you to stay and explore. Opened in 1914 as a working train station that welcomed hundreds of thousands of passengers, this Beaux-Arts landmark at 30 West Pershing Road is today one of the happiest places to spend a day in Kansas City, whether you arrive by train or simply wander in from downtown.
Start in the Grand Hall, where soaring ceilings, chandeliers and the famous station clock have made ‘meet me under the clock’ a local promise for generations. Trains still call here, but the halls now echo with living history: exhibitions, celebrations and families discovering Kansas City’s past together. The building is open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight, and just stepping inside is free and unforgettable.
From there, choose your adventure. Science City sparks hands-on discovery for curious kids and grown-ups, the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium lifts eyes to the stars, and the Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre and City Stage Theatre add movies and live performances. The current gallery exhibition, The Berlin Wall. A World Divided, adds a moving chapter of world history to the visit.
Happy City News tip: come for one attraction and leave time for the hall itself ā it is the city’s grand living room, and it glows at every hour.
