All Aboard Tiny Kansas City: The Model Railroad Experience at Union Station

Everything is smaller at the Model Railroad Experience — except the delight. Inside Union Station, volunteer engineers run miniature worlds: tiny Kansas City streetscapes, mountain passes and railyards where dozens of trains circle through hand-built scenery.

Kids press their faces to the glass hunting for the details builders hide in every scene — a parade here, a tiny drive-in there — while grandparents who remember the real trains tell the better stories. The gallery sits steps from the station’s own full-size locomotive history in the Grand Hall.

Admission is free with the station’s exhibits, and the exhibit’s holiday dressing makes winter visits extra special.

It’s proof that in Kansas City, even the small trains run on schedule — straight to a child’s imagination.
