One Cello, One Gayageum: CelloGayageum Brings a Dazzling East-Meets-West Duo to Houston

Houston is about to hear a musical conversation unlike any other. On Friday, November 13, 2026, at 7:30 p.m., Asia Society Texas presents CelloGayageum, the one-of-a-kind duo of cellist Sol Daniel Kim and gayageum player Dayoung Yoon, in partnership with Performing Arts Houston at the Asia Society Texas Center, 1370 Southmore Boulevard in the heart of the Museum District.

One instrument comes from the European concert hall; the other, the gayageum, is the 12-string Korean zither at the heart of gugak, Korea’s traditional music. Kim and Yoon founded CelloGayageum in Berlin in 2016, and for a decade they have been proving that a pairing that should not work on paper absolutely sings on stage. The duo writes its own music for the two instruments, building original pieces on Korean folk melodies and shaping them with the classical training both musicians bring to every performance.

It is a perfect match for Houston, a city that delights in cultural crossroads and in artists who build bridges between traditions. Expect an evening of warmth, virtuosity and surprise, as centuries-old Korean melodies meet the deep, singing voice of the cello. Arrive a little early to enjoy the landmark building itself, designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, and make a full Museum District night of it. Happy City News cannot think of a happier way to spend a Friday evening: two musicians, two continents, one stage.
