Houston is getting ready to welcome one of its own home in a big way. The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) will present Robert Pruitt: Infinite, the first survey exhibition of the artist’s practice in 25 years, on view from December 11, 2026 through April 4, 2027 in the Brown Foundation Gallery.
Pruitt was born in Houston in 1975, earned his bachelor’s degree at Texas Southern University in 2000 and his MFA at the University of Texas at Austin in 2003. The exhibition marks his return to his hometown a decade after he left in 2016 — and it arrives with more than 120 works: large-scale drawings, sculpture, mixed media, works on paper and personal ephemera that trace a remarkable career.
His large figurative portraits are beloved for the worlds they weave together: science fiction, rap, comics, Black political movements and traditional African cultures, in a lineage that runs through masters like Charles White and John Biggers. His work already lives in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Met, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem, and a catalogue co-published by CAMH and Pacific Books will accompany the show.
Curated by Ryan N. Dennis, CAMH’s Co-Director and Chief Curator, with major support from the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Ford Foundation, the celebration starts early: a free public opening on Thursday, December 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. (RSVP recommended, with a members’ preview from 6 to 7 p.m.), followed by In Conversation: Robert Pruitt and Ryan N. Dennis on Saturday, December 12, from 2 to 3 p.m.
