Houston art lovers have a new reason to stop by the Menil Collection this fall. The museum has just unveiled Wall Drawing / Redux: A119, a site-specific work by internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Jitish Kallat, now on view at the Menil Drawing Institute.
The dynamic piece is the eighth installment of the museum’s beloved ephemeral Wall Drawing Series, and it will remain on display through August 8, 2027 — giving visitors plenty of time to experience it.
Kallat’s layered, time-based wall drawing grows out of his engagement with Project A119, a declassified 1958 U.S. Air Force plan to detonate a nuclear device on the Moon. The Mumbai-born artist reimagines that Cold War-era document — political, military, and scientific all at once — into enlarged imagery that moves between the intimate and the immense, exploring questions of time, space, and how events are seen from afar.
Known for his materially experimental practice across drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and time-based media, Kallat has made drawing increasingly central to his work over the past decade.
Best of all, admission to the Menil Collection remains free, making this a perfect, inspiring outing for the whole family. Don’t miss the chance to stand before a work that is here today and gone tomorrow — catch it before the series turns to its next ephemeral chapter.
