Kids Meet the Motor City: A Child’s-Eye Tour of the Detroit Historical Museum

History is a lot more fun when you can walk through it. At the Detroit Historical Museum, kids step into the Streets of Old Detroit — cobblestones underfoot, a fur-trading post, old-fashioned shops — and suddenly three centuries of city history make sense.

Young visitors can hunt for the museum’s kid-sized treasures: a real one-room schoolhouse setup, vintage cars in the Motor City gallery, the gleaming Glancy Trains model railroad, and stories of Detroit kids who came before them. Family programs and scout overnights run through the year, and the museum’s Midtown location makes it an easy pairing with the DIA across the street.

The Detroit Historical Museum is at 5401 Woodward Avenue. Family program details are at detroithistorical.org. History class, but with cobblestones — the way it should be.
