Turn a museum visit into a treasure hunt and watch kids light up. At the Detroit Institute of Arts, challenge your crew to find: a suit of armor fit for a knight, an Egyptian mummy, a stained-glass window, a painting with a hidden dog, a samurai sword, a Dutch still life with a lemon peel, a sculpture made of car parts, a portrait of someone their own age, the biggest painting they can find — and Diego Rivera’s murals, where they’ll spot a whole factory of workers.
The DIA makes family visits easy with drop-in art-making workshops, gallery drawing supplies and kid-friendly trails. Best of all, general admission is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, so the hunt costs nothing but curiosity.
The museum is at 5200 Woodward Avenue in Midtown, open Tuesday through Sunday. Grab a family guide at the entrance and let the hunt begin.
