When Detroit families need room to run, they cross the bridge to Belle Isle. The 982-acre island park is a greatest-hits album for kids: the Belle Isle Nature Center, run with the Detroit Zoological Society, introduces little ones to Michigan wildlife; the sandy beach and waterslide cool off summer afternoons; and playgrounds and picnic shelters dot the oak-shaded lawns.
Build your day around the island’s free treasures — the aquarium and conservatory — then let the kids lead: kite-flying on the open fields, freighters passing at the island’s east end, and ice cream with a skyline view. In winter, the island turns quiet and beautiful, perfect for eagle-eyed birdwatching along the shore.
Belle Isle is a Michigan state park; vehicles need a Recreation Passport. The Nature Center posts family program schedules seasonally — check before you go and pack a picnic either way.
