A Toddler’s Perfect Morning at the Detroit Zoo

Taking a two-year-old to a 125-acre zoo sounds ambitious — until you know the tricks. At the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, the front of the park is toddler gold: the penguins of the Polk Penguin Conservation Center glide at eye level behind glass, the carousel spins gentle and slow, and the Tauber Family Railroad lets little legs rest while the scenery rolls by.

Arrive at opening, when animals are active and paths are calm. Pack snacks for the picnic areas, build in time at the Prairie Dog exhibit — toddlers can pop up in acrylic bubbles right inside the habitat — and keep the visit short and sweet. The zoo’s youngest fans do best with two happy hours rather than one long march.

The Detroit Zoo is open daily at 8450 West 10 Mile Road. Memberships pay for themselves in just a few visits, which is why so many metro Detroit families call this their home zoo.
