‘Armor as Fashion’: Knights Meet Couture at the Detroit Institute of Arts

Steel has never looked this stylish. Guests of Honor: Armor as Fashion, on view at the Detroit Institute of Arts through April 25, 2027, pairs gleaming suits of European armor with the world of fashion they inspired — embossed, etched and sculpted metal that was as much about image as protection.

The DIA’s arms and armor collection is a visitor favorite, and this special presentation places its masterpieces in a new light, showing how Renaissance armorers borrowed from textiles and tailoring — and how designers ever since have borrowed right back. Suits of armor shaped like doublets, helmets crested like sculpture: on the battlefield, looking powerful was a weapon of its own.

The exhibition is part of the DIA’s Guests of Honor series at 5200 Woodward Avenue. Tri-county residents enjoy free general admission, making this an easy add to any Midtown day.
